Was I Raped?


Members of the Dalhousie community speak up against sexual violence. Admin's note: We have received a number comments on this video over the past couple of days, many of which were in violation of our comment policy. In consultation with the Office of Human Rights, Equity and Harassment Prevention, we have closed comments on the story.

Many people have questions about what sexual assault is. The law is very clear about how the crime is defined. Here are some frequently asked questions:

  • Is it rape if I was passed out or unconscious? YES.
  • Is it rape if he threatened me, but didn’t hit me? YES.
  • Is it rape if he threatened to hurt someone else? YES.
  • Is it rape if there was only oral or anal penetration? YES.
  • Is it rape if I was too intoxicated to resist? YES.
  • Is it rape if we’re both the same sex? YES.
  • Is it rape if he used his position as a mental health provider, faith leader, or government official to coerce me? YES.
  • Is it rape if he worked at the nursing home where I lived? YES.
  • Is it rape if I was younger than 17? YES.
